The Art of Champions Tower Defense- Part 19 #Towns

+ Trainer Pass Giveaway! read more...

This week we take a look at Towns.

The towns are places where many come from near and far to show off their treasures and how great their guilds are.
"A town is a human settlement larger than a village but smaller than a city. The size definition for what constitutes a "town" varies considerably in different parts of the world." -Wikipedia

Using bandits to measure the height of the clock tower from WOW reference picture.
Scale is very important in games now a days and this game is no exception. The massive expanse of this world, whose boundaries are only known to Sam is filled with grand landscapes and treacherous lands, but it is also filled with towns and villages, worthy of exploration and even conquest.

Building the first town was kind of hard, because of the scale of these creatures compared to the worlds they live in vary greatly. Plus, is this game for the PC or phones? I had to make something that looked great enlarged as well as pocket sized. A town that looked lived in as well as serve the purposes that Sam has for the game. Challenge Accepted though.

"The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow."
- Bill Gates

The Art of Champions Tower Defense- Part 18 #Loot

+ Trainer Pass Giveaway! read more...

Woot! Woot!
This week we take a look at loot.

MMORPGs are knowns for their vast game loot. Players by the millions grind game levels and world maps for that delicious loot.

"Looting in a gaming context, specifically in massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) and MUDs, is the process by which a player character obtains items (or loot) such as in-game currency, spells, equipment, or weapons, often from the corpse of a creature or possibly the corpse of another player in a PVP situation." -Wikipedia

Gotta love looting those corpses, lol. In this game, looting is very important, it is the key to how you progress from level to level. You amass your guild army, but without the proper armor, weapons, etc. you'll be overrun by the first wave that's stronger than your guild.

You have to loot to succeed, you also get to sell your unwanted loot and you can auction your loot in the auction house. Not sure if you can trade or not. I'll have to look it up.

"Leave your village, and conquer yourself before you conquer the world. That’s what I did—I left my village. And once I master myself, I’m coming to a village near you to loot and pillage."
- Jarod Kintz

The Art of Champions Tower Defense- Part 17 #Workflow

+ Trainer Pass Giveaway! read more...

You gotta flow.
This week we take a look at workflow.

I know what you're going to say, what does "workflow" have to do with art. Well, a lot, actually. Hmmm, yup.

"A workflow consists of an orchestrated and repeatable pattern of business activity enabled by the systematic organization of resources into processes that transform materials, provide services, or process information.[1] It can be depicted as a sequence of operations, declared as work of a person or group..." -Wikipedia

I hate to say it, but workflow made all of this possible. I used to work without any workflow, I would feel it out and draw whatever I felt was right and then send it in, only to be sent back as being way off the mark.

It wasn't until we implemented a workflow of (meetings, task lists, step-by-step designs and concept references, examples of animation, tests and redesigns) a serious nature, that we began to see results.

Turning ideas into projects
I start each project with concept sketches, references and resources needed to complete the project. Note- Not every idea turns into a project, a lot of ideas end up in a file folder or in the trash. Once I look at my project calendar and determine which idea needs developing first, which idea needs incubating and which idea is garbage. I then fill the calendar with the shortest to longest projects.

 Writing notes
I write my ideas down on evernote or on a notebook for future reference. My mind needs to be free to work. I drop ideas down into evernote and move on, if later I'm burning with excitement over an idea that is stuck in my head, I look it up and develop it further. But if I can't remember the idea, it won't be done.

Seeking help
I talk to colleagues and bounce around ideas. They always have some tip or something they would change, and that's great. Don't argue, don't reject their insight. Make a note of their changes, just in case, it's what you needed later. Also find people who know what you're talking about, your friends might not be into your passions and dreams, be aware of that to avoid awkward moments.

It's important that I can actually do work in my workspace.
I make sure to have a comfortable work environment, that is intimate, and criticism free. Make sure you have your music available for those days you do mindless busy work, but also make sure you're not too distracted, you have to focus on getting the job done. Make your own happy place.

The internet has all the answers
I use the internet to learn, practice tutorials, find references anything I need to get the work done. Without it I wouldn't be here, because I'm a self-taught artist. I went to film school, but all the graphic design and animation stuff, I learned on my computer at home.

"Workflow is important..."

The Art of Champions Tower Defense- Part 16 #Animation

+ Trainer Pass Giveaway! read more...

Wow! Tomorrow is my Birthday! I'm getting old[er].
This week we take a look at animation.

Making images move is the reason I do this kind of work. I loved watching Saturday morning cartoons and old Disney animated movies as a kid. I'm very fortunate to be doing this kind of project.

"Animation is the process of creating motion and shape change illusion by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation." -Wikipedia

Making tiny people move around a map and fight each other to death is not as easy as it looks. It took some learning and a lot of practice to make this game come to life. I started with this faceless figure, that had to communicate to each player all kinds of actions with it's stiff little stumpy arms. Sigh.

Each part of the figure had it's own layer and it's on range of motion within the timeline. I had to make it convey that it was fighting a variety of moves as well as getting killed or dancing. All in very few frames. *note- After making them move, I would send the animations to Sam, he would then, re-animate them using Dragon Bones program to use in flash, which makes it even more tedious.

"Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive. This facility makes it the most versatile and explicit means of communication yet devised for quick mass appreciation."
-Walt Disney
